Game 2. Avs-Bruins. Varly steals the show.

Ladies and Gentlemen….Semyon Varlamov

What a game by Varlamov. He has clearly been the best player on the Avs during the young season so far. I even read an article today that said the Varlamov trade was a steal for the Avs. And while I’m not going to say that yet, he did win us the game today. 30 saves, highlighted by his UNREAL point blank save with 5 minutes left in the game. Avs fans have not seen goaltending like that since Craig Anderson was playing to get a new contract. (I just have to bring up, the Senators gave him a new deal, and he has allowed 11 goals in the first two games) The Avs needed all of Varlamov’s saves too, because Tuukka Rask was every bit as good with 35 saves, but let a Hejduk wrist shot through his legs at the 7:57 mark in the 3rd period.

The Avs looked good today. Much better than against Detroit. They controlled the puck for most of the game it felt like. The first period they dominated the Bruins. They drew 3 penalties, and constantly were in their zone. But they need to capitalize on that sort of play. They didn’t score during a 5-3, or any power-play for that matter, and they really should have been up by the end of the first period. They had quality chances but didn’t convert on most of them.

The Avs got 2 big points today. But they have only scored one goal in two games, and 62 shots, against 2 backup goalies. I’m not pushing the panic button yet, but if in these next three games against the Blue Jackets, Senators, and Canadiens, I don’t see much improvement, I may start to wonder, because Varlamov can’t carry us the whole season. I’m not saying it yet, but if it does happen, I think Greg Sherman needs to make a trade. We simply can’t afford to give Washington a top 10 pick and end up like Maple Leafs fans with Seguin.

Avs v. Blue Jackets starts at 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time on Wednesday.

  1. […] The last time the Avs played Boston in Boston, it was a very similar game, on the same exact date, but it was Semyon Varlamov who stole the show. Re-visit that game HERE […]
