Game 11. Avs-Kings. Duchene Saves the Day!

That was a huge win for the Avs. Could you imagine starting the season 5-1, having such high hopes, and then losing four of five. But the Avs pull out the victory and now have 14 points and a 7-4-0 record.

The Avs could not have asked for a better start from the Kings. They took two penalties in the first 3:18. However, those powerplays looked awful. So awful that I didn’t want to watch, and actually stopped for a little while. I mean, they couldn’t keep it in the Kings zone for more than 10 seconds. And just typing about it makes me want to punch the computer, it was that awful. And then the Avs took a penalty…

But low and behold Chuck Kobasew breaks in shorthanded, and has a very nice wraparound goal, which you can watch HERE. He still has been awful this year, but that goal gives him a roof in my doghouse, rather than just being left out in the rain.

But of course, within 30 seconds, my joy was gone, as the Kings came right back and scored. I would say that it was totally unacceptable, but the Kings were still on the powerplay and they go have a very good one, so I will let it slide…this time.

Hejduk keeps coming up with big goals this year though, and gave the Avs the lead and the momentum with a fluke goal in the second, as the puck was dumped in and took a funny bounce while Jonathan Quick was behind the goal. I can’t believe Hejduk didn’t shoot the puck right away with his backhand, but he proved me wrong when he still found a way to get the puck in the net.

Nothing the Avs could do about the Kings second goal either. On a 5-3 powerplay, you expect to see goals, and that is what happened.

But then, early in the third Duchene comes up with a snipe through Drew Doughty’s legs. You can’t get more accurate than that shot was. I’m begging you to watch it, even if you have already seen it, watch it again, it was that good. If I would have been that accurate on the golf course this summer, I would have won the Wyoming Mens Amateur (at a course with smaller fairways than most mini golf holes, and prairie right off the fairway as tall as most trees and as dense as the smog in China). But that is a story for a different day.

If there is one thing to complain about, it would be the goalie. Varlamov still had a very good game, but the one thing I am currently seeing from him that I don’t like is he is giving up a lot of rebounds. He stopped 30-32 which is very good, but he does not seem to be controlling the puck like he did earlier in the year. But either way, I still love seeing him in net for the Avs. Hopefully he plays against Phoenix, but knowing Sacco, and how he only plays Varly in 2/3 of the games, and Varly has played two in a row now, so I’m sure Giguere will start despite having two full days off. I really hope I’m wrong though.

The Avs next game is against the Coyotes on Wednesday at Pepsi Center, starting at 7:30 p.m. Lets get more people there than tonight’s 12,355. Come on fans. We can do better. Show the Coyotes what it is like to play in front of fans, because they don’t get a chance to often.
