Game 29. Avs-Flames. Lake Erie Monsters Lose to the Flames.

Don’t be fooled by the logo or jersey color, that clearly was an AHL team playing the Flames tonight. A pathetic 3rd period by the Avs leads to yet another loss.

The only reason that the Avs even had a chance in this game was Giguere. He was very solid tonight, and overall continued his strong play, and once again gave the Avs a chance to win.

This is why I don’t think the Avs will make the playoffs: Look at their lineup tonight. I know there were some injuries, but there are only 5 forwards who would be just contributors to any team that would be in the playoffs. They are Duchene, O’Reilly, Hejduk, Landeskog, and McClement. That is a joke. I’d like to hear an argument for anyone else? Jones, maybe…but he is not even contributing to this team. So why would he contribute to a playoff team that actually has good players? Galiardi? Once again, maybe? But even if he is playing great, he’s probably just a third liner at best.

Then there is Yip, Kobasew, Hunwick, McLeod, and probably Winnik, even though I like him. The first four don’t contribute at all. I’m dead serious when I say that those four should be career AHL players. Winnik fills a role nicely, but sure does not do anything offensively.

How are the Avs suppose to win games when they have less than 2 lines who would be productive players on other teams? It’s silly. Win 1-0 every game? That sure is what they wanted to do tonight. They scored that first goal, and they gave up offensively. The went into a shell and hoped Giguere would stop everything.

Another joke? Avs penalties. 16 minutes- Are you kidding me? How are the Avs supposed to win games when they are playing almost a whole period on the penalty kill. Keep your stick down. It’s not that hard.

On the bright side, Matt Duchene is incredible. He is going to be a star in this league, and he continues to impress me this season. I just wish I could see how good he is when there is actually talent around him. It has got to be the easiest job in the league to game plan against the Avs. I can just see that meeting: “Ok team, here is the plan- stop Duchene, stop O’Reilly.” “What about the rest of the team, coach?” “Hahaha, you never fail to make me laugh, now lets go get some lunch.”

The only positive thing that happened in the third period was TJ Galiardi scoring to tie the game at two. That was a huge goal at the time, but even that goal should have been stopped. The Avs got lucky, they just can’t capitalize on their luck.

I thought the defense played pretty good today. Certainly they can’t be blamed for the loss. Stefan Elliott is honestly worse at defense than Hunwick. Other than that, the goals that Calgary scored were just good plays. I honestly would say from here on out, the Avs will see more backup goalies than any other team. Why tire out your starter when your backup is going to get the win too.

Maybe it is just because it is fresh in my mind, but I honestly can’t think of a worse game they have played this year. It was painful to watch.

The Avs next game is tomorrow against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place. It starts at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
