Game 74. Avs-Rangers. Varlamov Steals 2 Points for the Avs

Posted: March 18, 2012 in Avs vs. New York Rangers, Game Thoughts

Gonna keep this post short as well, because I couldn’t watch the game, but talk about 2 huge points for the Avs.

The Avs allowed the first goal of the game midway through the first period when Mats Zuccarello tipped a shot past Varlamov. There was nothing Varlamov could have done to stop it, but scoring the first goal against good teams like the Rangers is important so the Avs dug themselves into a hole early.

But Matt Hunwick brought the Avs back into the game with a great goal. If I would have gone to Las Vegas at the beginning of the season and ask to bet on Matt Hunwick scoring a goal against Henrik Lundqvist this season, they would have pointed me toward the donation line instead, but sure enough he scored a beautiful goal to tie things up.

Midway through the second period, Landeskog tipped a shot through Lundqvist’s legs to give the Avs the lead. I have to imagine that after that goal, Varlamov completely took over the game. He faced 42 shots against one of the best teams in the league and only let one past him the whole game.

Paul Stastny added an empty netter for the Avs with 14 seconds left to secure the win. The Avs got 5 of a possible 6 points on the road trip, which is fantastic, but other teams are winning as well. The Avs got no help yesterday as both the Sharks and Kings won as well.

The Avs next game is Tuesday against the Calgary Flames at Pepsi Center. The game starts at 7 p.m. Mountain time.
