Game 15. Avs-Blues. Varlamov, Jones silence the Blues

I would have written this earlier, but Brian O’Reilly called me and said my readers were not valuing my character enough, and I should hold out for more viewers. In all honesty though, I only vaguely was able to watch/listen to the game, so I can’t say much about what actually happened in the game, although, not much did happen.

I will say that Semyon Varlamov stole this game for the Avs. They were grossly out shot in the first two periods (24-10) but the Avalanche goalie wouldn’t let one past him. The Avs seemed to have a quality third period however, which is encouraging because they have been struggling late in games recently.

And then of course, David Jones ended it with the first goal of the game, coming with just 16 seconds left in overtime. Oh Daivd Jones, it’s so easy to not like his contract, and it’s so easy to not like his production, but my goodness, when he does score, they’re huge goals. And to put the cherry on top, I’m 95% sure that Jones’ shot was deflected off of Kevin Shattenkirk’s stick, perfectly into the top right corner.

The Avs beat a high quality team in St. Louis, and the easy excuse is that it was the second game in as many days for the Blues, but keep in mind the Avs were missing Erik Johnson, Ryan Wilson, Gabe Landeskog, Steve Downie, and Mr. Character himself. The Avs defense (Barrie, Elliott, Zanon, Hejda, O’Byrne, and Hunwick) is far from anything special, but they worked together, and along with Varlamov shut the Blues down. And what a play/game for Matt Hunwick. That’s the player I’ve come to appreciate.

The Avs next game is Saturday against the LA Kings in California. The game starts at 2 p.m. Mountain time.
