2013 Mock Draft

Posted: June 29, 2013 in Uncategorized

Not that I know a lot about each team’s draft needs and prospect system, but I thought it’d be fun to try and predict the draft, so here it goes:

1. COLORADO: Nathan MacKinnon (C)- He’s the best player in the draft. 5 of the top 10 leaders scorers in the NHL last year were former first overall picks. Colorado makes the safe pick.

2. FLORIDA: Seth Jones (D)- The best defenseman in the draft. Florida struggled defensively last year, and Jones could help right away.

3. TAMPA BAY: Jonathan Drouin (LW)- The eventual successor to Marty St. Louis. Highly skilled, and should be able to help the Bolts right away.

4. NASHVILLE: Aleksander Barkov (C)- The last of the clear top end talent. It would be a pretty easy pick for Nashville at this point.

5. CAROLINA: Valeri Nichushkin (RW)- Now it gets interesting. Carolina is strong down the middle, so they go with a winger. They’ll be tempted to go defense, but take the big Russian.

6. CALGARY: Darnell Nurse (D)- I wouldn’t be surprised if Edmonton traded up here to grab a defenseman, but after losing Bouwmeester, the Flames will look to re-tool the blue line.

7. EDMONTON: Rasmus Ristolainen (D)- The Oils take a big 6’3” defenseman after signing Justin Schultz last year, to bolster the blue line.

8. BUFFALO: Elias Lindholm (C)- After trading Pomminville at the deadline, the Sabres look to add skill up front. Lindholm could go as early as 5 in my opinion.

9. NEW JERSEY: Sean Monahan (C)- Skilled player that’s too good to pass on. Jersey doesn’t have a ton down the middle, and Monahan will help in the future.

10. DALLAS: Nikita Zadorov (D)- Dallas’ defense is less than impressive. Combine that with the depth they have up front means Dallas goes with Zadorov.

11. PHILADELPHIA: Max Domi (LW)- The Flyers love offense. Wouldn’t be too surprised to see this pick moved, but if not, my guess is the skilled son of the former NHL tough guy.

12. PHOENIX: Bo Horvat (C)- Phoenix liked to play defensively, and they’ll draft a guy so can play in any situation.

13. WINNIPEG: Alexander Wennberg (C)- He is versatile, and can score goals. Winnipeg needs goal scorers. My guess is Wennberg.

14. COLUMBUS: Andre Burakovsky (LW)- The Jackets new GM is big on European talent, and they’ll take the Swede with the 14th pick.

15. NEW YORK ISLANDERS: Hunter Shinkaruk (LW/C)- Very talented offensive player, and after going defense in the first round last year, they go after offensive skill.

16. BUFFALO: Micro Mueller (D)- After going offense earlier in the first round, they’ll use their second pick on the best available defensive player.

17. OTTAWA: Kerby Rychel (LW)- Ottawa needs goal scorers, and Rychel had 87 points (40 goals) in 68 games in the OHL this year.

18. DETROIT: Anthony Mantha (LW)- He had 89 points in the QMJHL this year, and the Wings will be looking to add a playmaker to a veteran team.

19. COLUMBUS: Samuel Morin (D)- After going offense with their first pick, Columbus (like Buffalo) will flip flop and go with a defenseman. Huge body (6’6”) who will really help the blue line for the Blue Jackets.

20. SAN JOSE: Adam Erne (LW)- With a fairly young blue line, and an aging forward core, San Jose goes offense, and picks a player who averaged over a point a game in the QMJHL.

21. TORONTO: Ryan Pulock (D)- With rumors of Dion Phaneuf on the move, Toronto will pick the offensive defenseman out of the WHL.

22. CALGARY: Zachary Fucale (G)- With reports of Kiprusoff retiring, the Flames will take the first goalie of the draft.

23. WASHINGTON: Curtis Lazar (RW/C)- After the Caps traded Filip Forsberg at the deadline, they’ll look to re-tool their offensive talent in the system with the skilled forward.

24. VANCOUVER: Frederik Gauthier (LW/RW)- With an aging team, the Canucks will look to add both skill and grit with the big winger (6’3”, 193. 60 points in 62 games).

25. MONTREAL: Valentin Zykov (LW)- The Habs look to add scoring ability here, and will keep Zykov is Quebec.

26. ANAHEIM: Ryan Hartman (RW)- Anaheim will lose key players to retirement soon, and will quickly grab the winger from Plymouth, to be the successor to Temmu Selanne.

27. COLUMBUS: Robert Hagg (D)- The Jackets will again go to Europe and draft a big defenseman from Modo to help solidify the blue line.

28. CALGARY: Jacob De La Rose (C)- After drafting a defenseman and goalie, Calgary will go with a forward, and will pick the grinder from Sweden.

29. DALLAS: Nicolas Petan (C)- Dallas will go after the high scoring forward from the WHL. 120 points in 71 games, and despite his size (5’8”), could be a steal in this draft.

30. CHICAGO: Michael McCarron (RW)- Chicago finishes the first round with a big winger from the US National Development team. Could be an asset on the powerplay in the future for Chicago.
